Rise (Skillet album)
Rise is the ninth studio album by the American Christian rock band Skillet. It was released on June 25, 2013, through Atlantic Records and Word Records. The album was produced by Howard Benson, who also produced their previous album, Awake.
Rise is a concept album, focusing on the themes of overcoming adversity, standing up for what you believe in, and finding hope in the face of darkness. The narrative follows a young protagonist coming of age in a turbulent world. The album's storyline is further explored through a series of comic books created by Skillet in collaboration with Z2 Comics.
Musically, Rise continues Skillet's blend of hard rock, alternative metal, and symphonic elements. It features heavy guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and John Cooper's distinctive vocals, as well as Jen Ledger's backing vocals and occasional lead vocals. The album incorporates orchestral arrangements and electronic sounds to enhance its cinematic feel.
The album spawned several successful singles, including "Sick of It," "American Noise," "Rise," and "Not Gonna Die." Rise debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, selling 60,000 copies in its first week. It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The reception to Rise was generally positive, with critics praising its ambitious concept, strong songwriting, and energetic performances. Some reviewers noted its accessibility to a wider audience while maintaining the band's signature sound. The album has become a fan favorite and is considered a significant entry in Skillet's discography.
