San Giorgio Maggiore (church), Venice

San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine church on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy. It stands on an island of the same name, directly across from St. Mark's Square and is a prominent landmark in the Venetian lagoon.

Designed by Andrea Palladio, the church's construction began in 1566 and was completed in 1610, posthumously to Palladio's death. The facade, completed by Simone Sorella, is notable for its bright white marble and its integration of classical temple fronts. Palladio sought to harmonize the classical elements of the facade with the basilica form of the church, resulting in a prominent and visually striking design.

Inside, the church features a Latin cross plan and houses notable artworks, including two significant paintings by Tintoretto: The Last Supper and The Israelites Gathering Manna. Other artists whose works are featured within the church include Sebastiano Ricci.

A bell tower (campanile), accessible to visitors, provides panoramic views of Venice and the surrounding lagoon. The island and its church have been the subject of numerous paintings, photographs, and other artistic representations, owing to their iconic location and architectural beauty. The church remains an active place of worship and a popular tourist destination.
