Richard Eckersley (footballer)
Richard Eckersley (born 4 March 1989) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender.
Eckersley began his career with Manchester United, progressing through their youth academy. While with Manchester United, he was loaned to Royal Antwerp and Burnley. He made his professional debut for Burnley in 2009.
In 2011, Eckersley moved to Toronto FC in Major League Soccer (MLS). During his time in MLS, he also had loan spells with New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact.
Following his time in North America, Eckersley returned to England, playing for Oldham Athletic and then later for Accrington Stanley. He subsequently played for Salford City.
His playing career was notable for a relatively early retirement to pursue other interests, particularly philosophical and spiritual exploration. Eckersley has been open about his struggles with mental health and finding purpose outside of professional football. He has since focused on personal development and sharing his experiences.
