Rhiannon

Rhiannon is a prominent figure in Welsh mythology, primarily known from the Mabinogion, a collection of medieval Welsh tales. She appears most significantly in the First Branch of the Mabinogi, Pwyll Prince of Dyfed, and the Third Branch, Manawydan son of Llyr.

In Pwyll Prince of Dyfed, Rhiannon is first encountered as a beautiful woman riding a pale horse at a pace that defies pursuit. She is eventually overtaken by Pwyll, who she reveals has been chosen to be her husband. Despite being betrothed to Gwawl ap Clud, she engineers a clever plan that allows Pwyll to marry her instead.

Rhiannon is a queen of beauty, wisdom, and magic, but she also faces hardship and unjust accusations. After giving birth to a son, the child disappears. Rhiannon is falsely accused of infanticide and forced to endure a humiliating punishment for seven years. She is made to sit near a horse-block and offer to carry visitors to the court on her back.

In Manawydan son of Llyr, Rhiannon remains married to Manawydan (Pwyll having died), enduring further magical challenges alongside him and her stepson, Pryderi. She displays loyalty and courage throughout these trials.

The etymology of the name "Rhiannon" is often linked to the Proto-Celtic "rīganī", meaning "great queen" or "goddess." Some scholars associate her with the Romano-Celtic goddess Epona, the protector of horses. Rhiannon represents themes of sovereignty, justice, and resilience within Welsh mythology. Her story has been adapted and reinterpreted in various modern works of literature, music, and art.
