Suiyuan

Suiyuan was a historical province of China, existing from 1928 to 1954. It was located in the region of Inner Mongolia.

History:

Suiyuan was formed in 1928 during the Nationalist government era, carved out of the Chahar Special Administrative Region, the Rehe Special Administrative Region, and parts of northern Shanxi province. The name "Suiyuan" is derived from the cities of Suiyuan (present-day Hohhot) and Baotou, both located within the province. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Suiyuan was occupied by Japan and administered under various puppet regimes. After the war, it was briefly reunified with the rest of China under the Nationalist government.

Geography:

Suiyuan encompassed a large area of steppes, deserts, and mountains. Its southern border largely followed the Great Wall. The region was primarily inhabited by Mongol and Han Chinese populations.

Administration:

Suiyuan was administered as a province under the Nationalist government and later the People's Republic of China. Its capital was initially Guisui (later Hohhot).

Dissolution:

In 1954, Suiyuan province was dissolved and largely incorporated into the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A small portion was returned to Shanxi province. The dissolution reflected the consolidation of ethnic minority regions within the newly established People's Republic of China.
