John Stewart (Illinois politician)
John Stewart (1795 – 1866) was an American politician from Illinois. He served as a U.S. Representative for Illinois's 3rd congressional district from 1843 to 1847.
Born in Pittstown, New York, Stewart pursued classical studies and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Troy, New York. He relocated to Galena, Illinois in 1829 and continued his law practice.
Stewart was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1843 – March 3, 1847). During his time in Congress, he served on committees related to public lands and military affairs. He was known for his strong stance on internal improvements and his support for Henry Clay.
Following his congressional service, Stewart resumed the practice of law in Galena. He was involved in several business ventures, including mining and land speculation. He also served as a judge of the Jo Daviess County Court.
Stewart died in Galena, Illinois, and is interred in Greenwood Cemetery.
