Mark Saunders (police officer)

Mark Saunders is a Canadian former police officer who served as the Chief of Police for the Toronto Police Service from April 26, 2015, to July 31, 2020. He was the first Black chief of police in Toronto's history.

Saunders joined the Toronto Police Service in 1982. He rose through the ranks, holding various positions including Detective, Unit Commander in Professional Standards, and Superintendent in charge of 42 Division. Before becoming Chief, he was Deputy Chief of Police, overseeing the Specialized Operations Command.

As Chief, Saunders oversaw the implementation of various initiatives aimed at modernizing the police service, including the use of body-worn cameras and improvements to community engagement strategies. He also navigated complex issues such as rising gun violence and concerns about carding, a controversial police practice.

Since retiring from the Toronto Police Service, Saunders has held positions on various boards and committees, and has provided consulting services related to law enforcement and security.
