Picocell

A picocell is a small, low-power cellular base station typically covering a small area, such as a home, office, shopping mall, or railway station. It is used to extend cellular network coverage to indoor areas and densely populated areas where macrocells may have difficulty penetrating or providing sufficient capacity.

Picocells typically operate at a lower power level and have a shorter range than macrocells (traditional cell towers) and microcells, resulting in smaller cell sizes. This allows for increased frequency reuse and improved network capacity in high-traffic areas. They often utilize licensed or unlicensed spectrum, depending on the deployment scenario and regulatory requirements.

Picocells are often deployed as part of heterogeneous networks (HetNets), which combine different types of cell sites (macrocells, microcells, picocells, femtocells) to provide comprehensive coverage and capacity. They play an increasingly important role in supporting the growing demand for mobile data and improving the user experience in challenging radio environments. The backhaul connection for a picocell, which connects it to the core network, can be wired (e.g., Ethernet, fiber optic) or wireless (e.g., microwave).
