Somerset and Dorset West (European Parliament constituency)

Somerset and Dorset West was a European Parliament constituency covering the western parts of the counties of Somerset and Dorset in England. It existed from 1994 to 1999, electing one Member of the European Parliament (MEP) using the first-past-the-post electoral system.

The constituency was created in 1994 from parts of the former Somerset and Dorset constituency and Wiltshire North and Bath constituency, as part of a wider redrawing of European Parliament constituencies following an increase in the number of UK MEPs.

For the 1994 European Parliament election, the electoral wards comprising the Somerset and Dorset West constituency were:

  • Dorset: Beaminster, Blackmore Vale, Bridport, Broadwey, Chickerell, Lyme Regis, Marshwood Vale, Melcombe Regis, Portland Tophill, Portland Underhill, Puddletown, Rodwell, Stratton, Underhill, Upwey and Broadwey, West Bay, Weymouth East, Weymouth West, Yetminster.

  • Somerset: Blackmoor Vale, Brue, Cary, Crewkerne, Curry Rivel, Hamdon, Ivelchester, Islemoor, Martock, Parrett, Somerton, Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Windwhistle, Yeovil Central, Yeovil East, Yeovil North, Yeovil Preston, Yeovil South, Yeovil West.

Following a further increase in the number of UK MEPs, the constituency was abolished in 1999. The area was then included in the much larger South West England European Parliament constituency, which elected MEPs using proportional representation.
