Whirlwind (comics)
Whirlwind, also known as David Cannon, is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is primarily an enemy of Giant-Man and the Wasp, but has also clashed with the Avengers and other Marvel heroes.
Whirlwind is a mutant possessing the ability to spin his body at superhuman speeds, creating a miniature cyclone. He often wears a suit designed to withstand the stresses of his spinning and to further enhance his offensive capabilities with razor-sharp edges.
His origin varies slightly depending on the telling. In one version, he was a professional baseball pitcher who lost his arm in an accident, prompting him to seek revenge on those he blamed. In another, he was a former janitor named Charles Matthews who gained his powers through experimentation. Regardless of his origin, he became a criminal obsessed with speed and destruction, adopting the moniker "Whirlwind."
Whirlwind has been a member of various villainous groups throughout his comic book history, including the Masters of Evil and the Lethal Legion. He is often portrayed as a persistent and dangerous adversary, though generally lacking the strategic brilliance of some of Marvel's more prominent villains. He is driven primarily by his ego and a desire to prove his superiority through his powers. While not always successful, he remains a recurring threat in the Marvel Universe.
