Sven Giegold
Sven Giegold (born November 17, 1969, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) is a German economist and politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2009 to 2022, representing the German Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen).
Giegold's political career has been primarily focused on financial regulation, tax justice, and international trade. He was a prominent voice in the European Parliament advocating for stricter regulations on financial markets, including measures to prevent future financial crises and increase transparency. He also actively campaigned against tax evasion and avoidance, pushing for international cooperation to close tax loopholes.
Prior to entering politics, Giegold worked for Attac Germany, a network critical of globalization, where he was involved in campaigns against speculative financial flows and for a more equitable global economic order. He holds a degree in economics from the University of Bremen.
During his time in the European Parliament, Giegold served on several committees, including the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. He was also a leading member of the Greens/EFA group in the parliament. He left the European Parliament in 2022 to become State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in Germany, under Minister Robert Habeck. In this role, he continues to focus on economic policy and sustainable development.
