Hugh Fraser (British politician)

Hugh Charles Patrick Joseph Fraser (23 January 1918 – 6 March 1984) was a British Conservative politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1945 until his death in 1984, representing the Stone and Stafford constituencies.

Fraser was educated at Ampleforth College and Balliol College, Oxford. During World War II, he served with the Lovat Scouts, a commando unit, and saw action in Italy.

Entering Parliament in 1945, Fraser held several government positions during the Conservative administrations of the 1950s and 1960s. He served as Under-Secretary of State for War (1958-1960), Financial Secretary to the War Office (1960-1962), and Secretary of State for Air (1962-1964).

Following the Conservative defeat in the 1964 general election, Fraser remained a prominent figure on the backbenches. He was a strong supporter of the Special Air Service (SAS) and held strong views on defense and security matters. He was considered a leading figure on the right wing of the Conservative Party.

Fraser was married to Antonia Fraser, a renowned biographer and novelist. They had six children together. His political career was marked by both success in ministerial roles and a reputation for independent thought and a strong stance on his convictions. His death in 1984 marked the end of a long and significant career in British politics.
