Eastern Avenue (Washington, D.C.)

Eastern Avenue is a major street located in Washington, D.C., that forms a significant portion of the northeastern and southeastern boundary between the District of Columbia and the state of Maryland. It primarily separates Washington, D.C. from Prince George's County, Maryland.

The avenue runs roughly north-south, beginning near the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Riggs Road in Northeast D.C., and continuing southward until it terminates near Southern Avenue in Southeast D.C.

Eastern Avenue is primarily a residential street, characterized by single-family homes and some apartment buildings. It is a heavily trafficked road, particularly during peak commuting hours. The street provides access to a variety of neighborhoods in both Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland.

Unlike some other boundary streets in the District of Columbia, Eastern Avenue is entirely within the District of Columbia, with the property line for houses on the eastern side of the street technically in D.C. The Maryland-D.C. boundary runs along the eastern curb of the road. This oddity often leads to some confusion regarding jurisdiction.

Various bus routes of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operate along portions of Eastern Avenue, providing public transportation access to the neighborhoods it serves.
