Order (album)
Order is the sixth studio album by industrial metal band Ministry, released on April 23, 1996, by Warner Bros. Records. The album marked a significant departure from Ministry's signature industrial sound, incorporating elements of alternative metal, grunge, and even psychedelic rock.
The album's title is derived from the band members' observation of social structures and control mechanisms, particularly concerning law enforcement and hierarchical power dynamics. The lyrics often touch upon themes of social commentary, disillusionment, and rebellion against authority.
Order was produced by Al Jourgensen and Brian St. Clair. Musically, it features a less programmed and more live instrument-driven approach compared to Ministry's earlier work. Guitars play a more prominent role, and the overall sound is rawer and more organic.
While Order achieved moderate commercial success, reaching the Billboard 200 chart, it received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the band's willingness to experiment, while others criticized the album's lack of focus and the perceived dilution of Ministry's established sound. Several singles were released from the album, including "TV Song #6" and "The Fall."
The lineup for Order included Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker, Rey Washam, Bill Rieflin, Louis Svitek, and Duane Buford. The album remains a notable, albeit somewhat divisive, entry in Ministry's discography, showcasing a period of artistic exploration and experimentation.
