Paneth (crater)

Paneth is a lunar impact crater that lies near the eastern limb of the Moon. It is located to the northeast of the prominent crater Apollonius, and northwest of Firmicus. Due to its location, Paneth is subject to considerable foreshortening when viewed from the Earth.

The rim of Paneth is heavily worn and eroded, and has been reshaped by subsequent impacts. The most notable of these is Paneth B, a smaller but relatively prominent crater that is attached to the eastern outer rim. Several other small craterlets lie along the rim, particularly along the western and southern sides.

The interior floor of Paneth is relatively level, but it is marked by a number of tiny craterlets. The crater lacks a central peak or any other significant features.

The selenographical coordinates of Paneth are 17.1° N, 62.6° E, and it has a diameter of 60 kilometers. The crater was named after the Austrian chemist Friedrich Adolf Paneth.
