Pieria (mythology)

Pieria was a region in ancient Thessaly, Greece, located at the foot of Mount Olympus. It was considered the original homeland of the Muses in Greek mythology, before their association became primarily linked with Mount Parnassus and Mount Helicon.

• The region was traditionally associated with Pierus, a son of Makedon, after whom the land was named. In some accounts, Pierus was the father of nine daughters, the Pierides, who challenged the Muses to a singing contest and were subsequently transformed into magpies for their arrogance.
• Alternatively, the Pierides are sometimes considered to be nine daughters of the river god Pierus and a nymph. They were skilled in music and poetry but were ultimately defeated by the Muses.
