Gossip (band)
Gossip, also known as The Gossip, was an American indie rock band formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1999. The band consisted of vocalist Beth Ditto, guitarist Nathan Howdeshell (known as Brace Paine), and drummer Hannah Billie (later replaced by Kathy Mendonça, and then by Hannah Billie again).
Gossip achieved mainstream success with their 2006 album Standing in the Way of Control, particularly with the title track of the same name. The song became an anthem for LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, propelled by its catchy melody and Ditto's powerful vocals and unapologetic persona.
Known for their energetic live performances and Beth Ditto's outspoken advocacy for body positivity and LGBTQ+ rights, Gossip blended elements of punk rock, blues, and dance-punk into their sound. They released five studio albums: That's Not What I Heard (2001), Movement (2003), Standing in the Way of Control (2006), Music For Men (2009), and A Joyful Noise (2012).
The band officially announced their breakup in 2016, but reunited in 2024 with the release of their sixth studio album, Real Power.
