Phasael (name)

Phasael was a prominent figure in the Herodian dynasty of Judea during the 1st century BCE. He was the elder brother of Herod the Great, and the son of Antipater the Idumaean and Cypros, an Nabataean Arab.

Phasael played a significant role in consolidating Herodian power. His father, Antipater, appointed him governor of Jerusalem, while Herod was made governor of Galilee. Phasael proved to be a capable administrator and soldier.

During the invasion of Judea by the Parthians in 40 BCE, Phasael and Herod initially resisted. However, they were eventually forced to flee. While Herod escaped to Rome, Phasael was captured by the Parthians under their general Barzapharnes.

According to historical accounts, while imprisoned, Phasael committed suicide rather than face torture or be used as a pawn against his brother Herod. His death was a significant blow to Herod, who deeply mourned his loss.

Phasael's legacy primarily resides in his close relationship with Herod and his role in the political turmoil of Judea during a critical period of transition. He is also commemorated in the name of the Phasaelis tower, one of the three towers that Herod the Great built in Jerusalem, named after his brother and intended as a symbol of strength and remembrance.
