Želivka

Želivka refers primarily to two related but distinct entities in the Czech Republic:

  1. Želivka (River): A river in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Českomoravská vrchovina). It is a left tributary of the Sázava River. The Želivka is known for its exceptionally pure water, which has led to its utilization as a major source of drinking water for Prague and surrounding areas.

  2. Želivka Water Treatment Plant (Úpravna vody Želivka): The largest drinking water treatment facility in the Czech Republic. It draws water from the Želivka River via the Švihov Reservoir (Vodní nádrž Švihov), also commonly referred to as the Želivka Reservoir. The water is treated and supplied to Prague and a large portion of Central Bohemia. The plant is a critical piece of infrastructure ensuring the water supply for a significant population. The construction of the Švihov Reservoir and the water treatment plant significantly altered the landscape and ecology of the Želivka river valley. Concerns regarding the environmental impact of diverting water from the Želivka continue to be debated.
