Rampal (spiritual leader)

Rampal (born Ramchandra Das on September 8, 1951) is an Indian religious leader and self-styled godman. He is the founder of the Satlok Ashram, a religious organization with centers across India. Rampal's teachings focus on a form of Bhakti Yoga rooted in interpretations of various scriptures, including the Vedas, Bhagavad Gita, Quran, and Bible. He advocates for a simple, devotional lifestyle and condemns idol worship, dowry, and other social evils.

Rampal's followers believe him to be a reincarnation of Kabir, a 15th-century Indian mystic and poet. His teachings often draw criticism from mainstream Hindu organizations who dispute his interpretations of Hindu scriptures and his criticisms of traditional practices.

Rampal has faced legal challenges, including accusations of sedition, murder, and conspiracy. He was arrested in November 2014 following a standoff between his supporters and police at his ashram in Hisar, Haryana. In October 2018, he was convicted in two separate cases of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. His conviction and subsequent imprisonment led to clashes between his followers and authorities.
