Nicholas Monck (civil servant)

Nicholas Monck (born 1934) was a British civil servant. He is best known for his long career in the Home Office and his expertise in policy relating to broadcasting and telecommunications.

Monck joined the Home Office in 1957 and served in various positions, including Principal Private Secretary to the Home Secretary in the 1970s. He rose through the ranks to become a Deputy Under-Secretary of State in 1988, with responsibility for broadcasting and data protection. In this role, he played a significant part in the development of policies concerning satellite and cable television, and the emerging digital technologies of the time.

Monck's responsibilities extended to the implementation of the Data Protection Act 1984, a landmark piece of legislation addressing the processing of personal data. He was involved in negotiating international agreements related to data protection.

He retired from the Home Office in 1994. After his retirement, Monck remained active in public life, serving on various advisory bodies and committees related to telecommunications and information technology. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in recognition of his public service.
