Favaloro

René Gerónimo Favaloro (1923-2000) was a world-renowned Argentinian cardiac surgeon, best known for developing the coronary artery bypass surgery.

Born in La Plata, Argentina, Favaloro initially practiced as a rural doctor in Jacinto Aráuz, La Pampa. His experiences serving the health needs of this rural community shaped his approach to medicine and his emphasis on accessible healthcare.

In the early 1960s, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he trained at the Cleveland Clinic. It was there that he pioneered the use of the saphenous vein graft in coronary artery bypass surgery, a technique he first performed in 1967. This revolutionary procedure significantly improved the treatment of coronary artery disease and quickly gained worldwide acceptance.

Favaloro returned to Argentina in the 1970s and founded the Fundación Favaloro, a leading medical institution dedicated to cardiac surgery, cardiology, and medical education. The Foundation also focused on research and social work.

Beyond his surgical innovations, Favaloro was a passionate advocate for preventative medicine and improved healthcare access for all. He was a prolific writer and lecturer, committed to educating both medical professionals and the general public about heart health.

Tragically, Favaloro took his own life in 2000, amidst Argentina's economic crisis. He left behind a legacy of medical innovation, humanitarianism, and a commitment to improving the lives of patients worldwide. His contributions to cardiac surgery continue to save countless lives every year.
