Petroleum Commission (Ghana)
The Petroleum Commission (Ghana) is the government agency responsible for regulating, managing, and coordinating all activities in Ghana's upstream petroleum industry. Established by the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, 2016 (Act 919), the Commission plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable development and utilization of Ghana's petroleum resources.
Its core functions include:
- Regulation: Overseeing and enforcing compliance with petroleum laws, regulations, and standards. This includes issuing permits and licenses for petroleum exploration, development, and production activities.
- Monitoring: Monitoring petroleum operations to ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and technical standards.
- Management of Data: Collecting, managing, and disseminating petroleum data and information.
- Promotion of Local Content: Promoting the participation of Ghanaian citizens and companies in the petroleum industry through local content development and capacity building initiatives.
- Advisory Role: Advising the Minister responsible for petroleum on policy matters related to the upstream petroleum sector.
- Revenue Assurance: Ensuring the accurate measurement, reporting, and payment of petroleum revenues.
The Commission works with various stakeholders, including international oil companies, local businesses, government ministries, and civil society organizations, to promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the petroleum sector. Its ultimate goal is to maximize the benefits of Ghana's petroleum resources for the socio-economic development of the country while safeguarding the environment.
