George Abbot (author)

George Abbot (1562-1633) was an English theologian who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1611 to 1633. While primarily known for his ecclesiastical role and theological writings, he also authored and contributed to various works of historical and religious significance.

Abbot received his education at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and Balliol College, Oxford. He became Master of University College, Oxford, in 1597 and served as Vice-Chancellor of the University on several occasions. His early career was marked by staunch Protestant beliefs, which shaped his later writings and actions as Archbishop.

His major works include:

• A Brief Description of the Whole World (1599): A popular geographical treatise, which went through numerous editions. It provided a survey of the world's countries, their customs, and religions, reflecting the knowledge of the time. While a popular work, its scholarly rigor is not particularly high.
• The Old Way: A Sermon (1610): This sermon reflects Abbot's Calvinist theological views and his emphasis on the importance of traditional Protestant doctrine.
• Numerous sermons and theological treatises published throughout his career, often focused on defending Protestantism and addressing contemporary religious controversies.

Abbot's appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury followed the death of Richard Bancroft. He was seen as a figure acceptable to both the King, James I, and the more Puritan wing of the Church of England. However, his Calvinist leanings and generally low-key approach to enforcing religious conformity made him unpopular with the more Arminian-leaning members of the clergy and, later, with Charles I.

A significant event in Abbot's life was the accidental shooting of a gamekeeper in 1621. This incident caused considerable controversy and debate about his fitness to hold the office of Archbishop. Although he was ultimately pardoned and reinstated, his authority was diminished.
