National Convention Party (The Gambia)

The National Convention Party (NCP) was a political party in The Gambia. It was founded by Sheriff Mustapha Dibba in 1975 after he was dismissed from the ruling People's Progressive Party (PPP). Dibba, who served as Vice President under Dawda Jawara, became a leading opposition figure.

The NCP contested several elections, often presenting a significant challenge to the PPP's dominance. Dibba himself ran for president multiple times. The party's platform generally focused on addressing issues of corruption and promoting economic development.

Following the 1994 military coup led by Yahya Jammeh, the NCP, along with other political parties, was banned. While the ban was eventually lifted, the party struggled to regain its former prominence. Sheriff Dibba passed away in 2008.

In subsequent elections, the NCP's performance declined significantly. It eventually merged with other opposition parties to form larger coalitions aimed at challenging the ruling party. The party's later years were marked by internal divisions and a struggle to maintain relevance in the Gambian political landscape. Its influence has waned considerably since its peak in the late 1970s and 1980s.
