HMS Jupiter (1778)

HMS Jupiter was a 50-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1778. She was built by Barnard of Ipswich.

Jupiter saw action during the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary Wars. Notable events in her service include her participation in the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1780, where she engaged Spanish warships. She also participated in the Battle of Porto Praya in 1781, under Commodore George Johnstone, against a French squadron commanded by Bailli de Suffren.

Later in her career, during the French Revolutionary Wars, Jupiter was involved in the action of 22 October 1794, capturing the French frigate Atalante off the coast of Ireland.

The ship was eventually converted to a storeship in 1808 and broken up in 1816.
