Pitchblende (band)
Pitchblende was an American indie rock band active primarily in the 1990s. Known for its distinctive sound blending elements of post-punk, noise rock, and experimental music, Pitchblende achieved a cult following within underground music circles. The band's core members consisted of Doug McCombs (also known for his work in Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day), bassist and vocalist Jessica Rylan, and drummer Jim Kimball.
Pitchblende's music was characterized by its angular guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and often dissonant harmonies. Rylan's vocals, which ranged from melodic to spoken word, added to the band's unique and somewhat abrasive sonic texture. Their lyrical content frequently explored themes of alienation, urban decay, and societal unease.
While Pitchblende never achieved mainstream success, they released several well-regarded albums and EPs on independent record labels, contributing to the vibrant indie music scene of the era. Notable releases include albums like Big Bent (1993) and Pitchblende (1997), and EPs such as We Offer You Titles (1994). Following their active period, the band members pursued other musical projects. Pitchblende’s influence can be heard in subsequent generations of experimental and noise rock artists.
