Union Station (Worcester, Massachusetts)

Union Station in Worcester, Massachusetts, is a historic intermodal transportation hub. Originally opened in 1875, it served as a grand railway station, connecting Worcester to major cities throughout the Northeast. Designed by architects Peabody & Stearns in a High Victorian Gothic style, it quickly became a significant landmark in the city.

Over the decades, rail passenger traffic declined, and the station fell into disrepair. It closed in 1975 and remained largely unused for many years.

A major renovation project, spanning several years and costing tens of millions of dollars, restored Union Station to its former glory. The renovated station reopened in 2000 and currently serves as a transportation center for Amtrak passenger rail service, intercity bus lines (including Greyhound and Peter Pan), and local Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) bus routes.

The renovated station includes a grand waiting hall, retail spaces, and office space. It is a key component of Worcester's downtown revitalization efforts and serves as a symbol of the city's history and future. The station's architecture and design have been recognized with several awards. Its location is 2 Washington Square, Worcester, MA 01604.
