Whistle (band)
Whistle was an American hip-hop/new jack swing trio from Brooklyn, New York, best known for their 1986 debut single "(Nothin' Serious)" and their album Whistle.
The group consisted of rappers Jalil Hutchins, Larry "Flash" Sanders, and Fonda Rae. Initially, only Hutchins and Sanders were members. Fonda Rae, an established vocalist, was added to provide a melodic counterpoint to their rapping.
Their debut single, "(Nothin' Serious)", produced by Profile Records, became a major hit, utilizing a prominent sample of the Beastie Boys' "Hold It Now, Hit It". This helped pioneer the use of sampling in hip-hop music and exposed Whistle to a large audience. The song's success was followed by their self-titled debut album, Whistle.
While they continued to release music, including subsequent albums, they were unable to replicate the widespread popularity of their initial hit. The group eventually disbanded in the early 1990s. However, "(Nothin' Serious)" remains a popular song, frequently featured on old-school hip-hop radio stations and compilations.
