Money Island (Branford, Connecticut)
Money Island is a small, uninhabited island located in Long Island Sound, off the coast of Branford, Connecticut. It is part of the Thimble Islands, an archipelago of rocky islets renowned for their picturesque scenery and diverse wildlife.
The island's name likely derives from a local legend that Captain Kidd, a notorious pirate, buried treasure there. Despite numerous searches, no treasure has ever been found, but the name has persisted for centuries.
Money Island is primarily composed of granite bedrock with sparse vegetation, consisting mainly of grasses, shrubs, and some small trees able to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The island is a popular spot for recreational boating and kayaking, offering views of the other Thimble Islands and the Connecticut coastline. It is also a significant habitat for various seabirds.
Because it is privately owned and uninhabited, there are no facilities or services available on Money Island. Landing is permitted on the small beach, but visitors are asked to respect the fragile environment and leave no trace.
