Abdul Hamid (field hockey)
Abdul Hamid (born January 1, 1927, Bannu, North-West Frontier Province, British India – died July 12, 2019, Islamabad, Pakistan), also known as Hamidi, was a Pakistani field hockey player. He captained the Pakistan national team that won the gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, defeating India 1-0 in the final.
Hamid was also a member of the Pakistani team that won the silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the gold medal at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. He also participated in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where Pakistan finished fourth.
Hamidi played as a forward and was known for his speed, agility, and goal-scoring ability. After retiring from playing, he remained involved in hockey administration, serving in various roles including selector and coach. He is considered one of the legends of Pakistani field hockey and a significant figure in the sport's history in the country. He received the Pride of Performance award from the Government of Pakistan in recognition of his services to the sport.
