Ráfael Vásquez (general)

Ráfael Vásquez (born circa 1796, date of death unknown) was a Mexican military general who is primarily known for leading two incursions into Texas in 1842. These raids were significant events in the period between the Texas Revolution and the U.S.-Mexican War, reflecting Mexico's continued claim to the territory.

Vásquez's first invasion occurred in March 1842, when he briefly occupied San Antonio with a force of around 500 men. After holding the city for two days and claiming it for Mexico, Vásquez and his troops withdrew back across the Rio Grande. While militarily insignificant, this raid caused considerable panic in Texas and fueled anxieties about a renewed Mexican invasion.

Later that year, in September 1842, Vásquez participated in a second, larger-scale invasion led by General Adrián Woll. This time, the Mexican force captured San Antonio again, remaining for a longer period. However, they were eventually forced to retreat following the Battle of Salado Creek and the Dawson Massacre.

Details about Vásquez's life beyond these Texas incursions are scarce. His role, however, highlights the turbulent state of affairs between Texas and Mexico in the years following Texas independence. He is remembered as a key figure in Mexico's attempts to reassert control over the disputed territory.
