Stobswell
Stobswell is a residential area in the city of Dundee, Scotland. Situated to the northeast of the city centre, it's generally considered to be bounded by Albert Street to the south, Arbroath Road to the east, Clepington Road to the north, and either Hilltown or the railway line to the west.
Historically, Stobswell developed as a working-class area alongside Dundee's growth as a major industrial centre, particularly in jute manufacturing. The name "Stobswell" is believed to derive from the Scots words "stob" (meaning a post or stake) and "well," possibly indicating a well marked by a post.
The area contains a mix of housing types, including traditional tenement buildings, terraced houses, and more modern developments. While traditionally a densely populated area, Stobswell has seen some redevelopment and changes in its demographic makeup in recent decades.
Key features of Stobswell include its local shops and services, community facilities such as parks and community centres, and its proximity to other parts of Dundee. The area also benefits from several bus routes providing access to the city centre and surrounding areas.
Stobswell has a distinct community identity, shaped by its history and the people who live there. It continues to be a significant part of Dundee's urban landscape.
