John Greaves (musician)
John Greaves (born 1950, Prestatyn, Wales) is a Welsh bass guitarist and composer, known for his work with the avant-garde rock groups Henry Cow, National Health, and Soft Heap, as well as his solo career.
Greaves began his musical career playing in various local bands before joining Henry Cow in 1969. His contributions to the band included composing and arranging, as well as playing bass guitar and contributing vocals. Henry Cow disbanded in 1978, after which Greaves co-founded National Health with Dave Stewart and Alan Gowen. He played on their first album before departing to pursue other projects. He was also a member of Soft Heap, an experimental jazz-rock band.
Throughout his career, Greaves has released numerous solo albums and collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Peter Blegvad, Lisa Herman, and Robert Wyatt. His work often incorporates elements of rock, jazz, and contemporary classical music, and he is known for his intricate compositions and distinctive bass playing. He has also composed music for film, theatre, and dance. His songwriting often displays a sophisticated and literary sensibility.
