Medialuna (fish)
Medialuna is a common name for several species of fish belonging to the genus Medialuna, which is part of the family Kyphosidae (sea chubs). These fish are typically found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly off the coasts of California and Baja California.
Medialuna californiensis, the California halfmoon, is a well-known species. They are characterized by their laterally compressed bodies, crescent-shaped (halfmoon) caudal fins, and dark blue-gray to black coloration. Juveniles may exhibit some barring.
These fish are often found in rocky reef environments and kelp forests, where they feed on algae and small invertebrates. They are generally considered to be schooling fish.
Medialunas are not considered a major commercial or recreational fish, although they may be caught incidentally while fishing for other species. They are also sometimes displayed in public aquariums.
The name "Medialuna," meaning "half moon" in Spanish, refers to the shape of their tail fin.
