Tottori at-large district (House of Representatives)

The Tottori at-large district (鳥取県全県区, Tottori-ken zenken-ku) is a single-member constituency in the House of Representatives of the Diet of Japan. It represents the entire prefecture of Tottori.

Historically, Tottori prefecture was represented by multiple multi-member districts. Following electoral reforms in 1994, which introduced a combination of single-member districts and proportional representation, Tottori became a single at-large district in the 1996 general election. This means that the entire prefecture acts as a single electoral district, and voters cast their ballots for a single candidate to represent them in the House of Representatives.

The creation of at-large districts was intended to address issues of malapportionment, where some districts had significantly more voters than others. By treating the entire prefecture as a single district, population discrepancies were minimized. However, it also meant that smaller prefectures like Tottori, with relatively low populations, only had one representative in the lower house elected directly.

The electoral dynamics in the Tottori at-large district, like in other single-member districts, are heavily influenced by national political trends, party affiliations, and the local prominence of individual candidates. The district has been historically competitive between candidates from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and opposition parties.
