Master and Man (1929 film)

Master and Man is a 1929 British silent film directed by George Pearson. It is based on the short story of the same name by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1895. The film tells the story of a wealthy landowner, Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov, and his peasant worker, Nikita, who get caught in a blizzard while traveling.

The film explores themes of social inequality, greed, and redemption. Vasili's initial concern is only for his own well-being and profit, ignoring Nikita's warnings about the impending storm. As they become increasingly lost and struggle to survive, Vasili begins to understand the value of human connection and selflessness. Nikita's loyalty and endurance ultimately force Vasili to confront his own selfishness. The film culminates in Vasili sacrificing himself to save Nikita from freezing.
