Caerleon

Caerleon is a town in southeast Wales, situated on the River Usk. It is historically significant as the location of Isca Augusta, one of the three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain. Isca Augusta was established around AD 75 and served as the headquarters for the Legio II Augusta (Second Augustan Legion) for over 200 years.

The name "Caerleon" is derived from the Welsh "Caer Llion," meaning "Fortress of the Legion." The Roman fortress at Caerleon included barracks, granaries, a hospital, baths, an amphitheater, and a basilica. Substantial remains of these structures can still be seen today, offering insights into Roman military life.

Following the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the early 5th century, Caerleon likely remained a center of power. It is often associated with the Arthurian legend, with Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae placing Arthur's court at Caerleon.

Today, Caerleon is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in Roman history and archaeology. Significant sites include the Roman Baths Museum, the amphitheater, and the legionary barracks. The town also features a number of medieval buildings and is a thriving residential area.
