Karioi

Karioi is a mountain located on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, near the town of Raglan. It is a dormant volcano, reaching a height of 756 meters (2,480 feet). Karioi is a significant landmark in the region, visible for many kilometers around.

Karioi is composed primarily of andesite lavas and breccias, formed during volcanic activity that occurred mostly between 2.4 and 1.75 million years ago in the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. This volcanism is associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Australian Plate.

The mountain is of cultural significance to the local Māori iwi (tribe), particularly Ngāti Māhanga, who consider it sacred. The name "Karioi" has traditional meanings that are tied to the history and beliefs of the iwi. Access to certain areas of the mountain may be restricted due to its cultural importance.

The slopes of Karioi are covered in native bush, including broadleaf forest and regenerating scrub. The area provides habitat for a variety of native birds and other wildlife. Several walking tracks lead to the summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and countryside. Due to its isolated coastal location, the tracks can be exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect the native flora and fauna of Karioi, as well as to manage the impact of tourism and recreational activities. These efforts often involve collaboration between local iwi, conservation organizations, and government agencies.
