Crinifer

Crinifer is a genus of birds in the turaco family, Musophagidae. They are commonly known as grey go-away-birds. The genus contains two species: the Grey Go-away-bird ( Crinifer concolor) and the Western Plantain-eater (Crinifer piscator). These birds are native to sub-Saharan Africa.

Characteristics:

Members of the Crinifer genus are characterized by their predominantly grey plumage, long tails, and prominent crests. They are relatively large birds within the turaco family. They lack the vibrant red and green coloration found in many other turaco genera. They are known for their loud, nasal calls, particularly the "go-away" sound, which gives the Grey Go-away-bird its common name.

Habitat and Distribution:

Crinifer species inhabit a variety of woodland and savanna environments across Africa. Their distribution is generally south of the Sahara Desert.

Diet:

The diet of Crinifer species consists mainly of fruits, flowers, leaves, and seeds. They may also occasionally consume insects.

Taxonomy:

The Crinifer genus was formerly considered to include other plantain-eaters, but these are now typically classified in the genus Criniferoides. The taxonomic classification of turacos has undergone revisions, reflecting advancements in phylogenetic studies.

Conservation Status:

Both species within the Crinifer genus are currently listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their populations appear to be stable.
