MacDowell (artists' residency and workshop)

MacDowell, also known as the MacDowell Colony, is an artists' residency program located in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Founded in 1907 by composer Edward MacDowell and his wife, pianist Marian MacDowell, its mission is to nurture the arts by offering creative individuals of the highest talent an inspiring environment in which to produce enduring works of the imagination.

MacDowell provides residencies to artists working in various disciplines, including architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Residencies typically last several weeks and offer artists private studio space, accommodation, and meals, allowing them to focus solely on their creative work.

The application process is highly competitive and reviewed by rotating peer panels composed of artists working in the respective disciplines. MacDowell is committed to diversity and encourages applications from artists of all backgrounds.

Throughout its history, MacDowell has hosted many prominent artists, contributing significantly to the development of American and international arts and culture. It is one of the oldest and most respected artists' residency programs in the United States. The organization is a non-profit supported by grants, donations, and endowment income.
