Kaimakli
Kaimakli is a village located just southwest of Nicosia, Cyprus, now effectively a suburb of the city. Historically, it was a distinct agricultural village known for its fertile land and orange groves. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Kaimakli became a border area, divided by the UN buffer zone. As a result, some parts of the village are inaccessible.
Prior to the division, Kaimakli was inhabited by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The population displacement following the invasion resulted in significant demographic changes.
Today, Kaimakli retains some of its traditional Cypriot character, particularly in the areas away from the buffer zone. There are notable examples of Cypriot vernacular architecture, including traditional houses with courtyards. The area is experiencing ongoing development and integration into the urban sprawl of Nicosia.
