Hatto II

Hatto II (c. 940 – 970) was Archbishop of Mainz from 968 until his death. He was also Duke of Lorraine from 959 to 960.

Little is known about Hatto II's early life. He belonged to a noble Swabian family. His predecessor as Archbishop of Mainz was William, the illegitimate son of Emperor Otto I. Upon William's death in 968, Otto I appointed Hatto II to the position, likely due to Hatto's loyalty and administrative abilities.

Hatto II's archiepiscopate was relatively short. He continued the policies of his predecessor, supporting the Ottonian dynasty and furthering the interests of the Archbishopric of Mainz. The archdiocese was one of the most important in the Holy Roman Empire, holding considerable political and ecclesiastical power. As Archbishop, Hatto II was an influential figure in the imperial court.

Hatto II's brief tenure as Duke of Lorraine is more obscure. He held the title for approximately one year, likely acting as a temporary administrator for the region while the Emperor sought a more permanent solution for governing the duchy. His appointment and subsequent removal suggest a period of instability and shifting alliances in Lorraine.

He died in 970 and was succeeded as Archbishop of Mainz by Willigis.
