Joe Caldwell
Joe Caldwell (born November 1, 1941) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'5" guard/forward, Caldwell was known for his defensive prowess and all-around athletic ability.
Caldwell played collegiately at Arizona State University, where he was a standout performer. He was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick in the 1964 NBA draft. However, he opted to play for the American Basketball League (ABL) before joining the NBA.
He played for the Detroit Pistons for one season before moving to the St. Louis Hawks (later the Atlanta Hawks). He was a four-time NBA All-Star (1969-1972) during his time with the Hawks and Carolina Cougars (ABA).
Caldwell was also a member of the gold medal-winning United States men's basketball team at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
In 1970, Caldwell jumped to the American Basketball Association (ABA) to play for the Carolina Cougars. He was named to the All-ABA First Team in 1971. He later played for the Spirits of St. Louis and the San Diego Sails in the ABA before returning to the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers for his final season in 1975-76.
