Al-Kafrun

Al-Kafrun (Arabic: الكافرون) is the name of the 109th chapter (Surah) of the Quran. It is a short Surah consisting of six verses. The title, "Al-Kafrun," translates to "The Disbelievers" or "Those Who Reject Faith."

The Surah is understood to be a declaration of religious disassociation and independence from polytheistic practices. It is often interpreted as a clear distinction between the worship of Allah (God) in Islam and the idols or deities worshipped by the pagan Arabs of Mecca at the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Surah directly addresses the disbelievers, stating that the Prophet Muhammad would not worship what they worshipped, nor would they worship what he worshipped. This mutual non-worship is repeated for emphasis.

The final verse of the Surah, "For you your religion, and for me my religion," (Arabic: لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ) is considered a foundational statement emphasizing religious tolerance and the principle of individual religious freedom, although its historical context and interpretations vary among scholars. Some interpret it as a statement of peaceful coexistence in a specific historical situation, while others see it as a broader principle of religious autonomy.
