Hercules
Hercules, also known as Heracles in Greek mythology, is a legendary hero and demigod, renowned for his extraordinary strength, courage, and a wide array of adventures. He is one of the most well-known figures in classical mythology and his stories have been retold and reinterpreted throughout history.
Origins and Lineage:
Hercules was the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and Alcmene, a mortal woman. Zeus seduced Alcmene by disguising himself as her husband, Amphitryon. Hera, Zeus's jealous wife, relentlessly persecuted Hercules throughout his life.
The Twelve Labors:
Hercules is most famous for performing the Twelve Labors, a series of seemingly impossible tasks imposed upon him as penance for murdering his wife and children in a fit of madness induced by Hera. These labors included:
- Slaying the Nemean Lion
- Slaying the Lernaean Hydra
- Capturing the Ceryneian Hind
- Capturing the Erymanthian Boar
- Cleaning the Augean Stables in a single day
- Slaying the Stymphalian Birds
- Capturing the Cretan Bull

- Obtaining the Girdle of Hippolyta
- Obtaining the Cattle of Geryon

Other Adventures and Accomplishments:
Beyond the Twelve Labors, Hercules participated in numerous other adventures. He fought alongside the Argonauts, rescued Prometheus from his torment, and battled giants and monsters across the ancient world. He is often depicted as a protector of humankind.
Death and Apotheosis:
Hercules's death was brought about by a poisoned shirt given to him by his wife, Deianira, who had been tricked into believing it was a love charm. The poison burned Hercules intensely, and to escape the pain, he built himself a funeral pyre and ascended into the heavens. Due to his heroic deeds and divine parentage, he was granted immortality and became a god on Mount Olympus.
