Somayaji
A Somayaji (Sanskrit: सोमयाजिन्, IAST: Somayājin) is a Nambudiri Brahmin man in Kerala, India, who has performed the Agnicayana ritual, also known as the Atirathram or Soma Yaga. The Agnicayana is an elaborate Vedic fire ritual, traditionally involving the construction of a specific type of fire altar and the chanting of Vedic mantras over several days. The rite aims to purify the performer and bring prosperity. The term "Somayaji" literally means "one who has offered Soma," referring to the Soma sacrifice, a key element of the Agnicayana ritual. Performing the Agnicayana bestows a high social and religious status within the Nambudiri community. The continuation of Agnicayana traditions and the Somayaji title are essential for preserving ancient Vedic rituals in Kerala.
