Imroz (painter)

Imroz (born Inderjit Singh) (1926 – 2020) was an Indian painter, poet, and writer, best known for his close association and lifelong companionship with renowned Punjabi poet and writer Amrita Pritam. While Pritam achieved widespread literary fame, Imroz’s contributions were often overshadowed, though he was a significant artist in his own right.

Imroz developed a distinctive style characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and a symbolic representation of human emotions and spiritual themes. He frequently depicted themes of love, longing, and the beauty of nature in his paintings. His art moved beyond traditional Indian art forms, incorporating modern influences and reflecting a deep personal connection to his inner world.

His relationship with Amrita Pritam was a defining aspect of his life and art. He often collaborated with her, illustrating her books and poems. Their bond, unconventional for its time, was one of mutual respect, artistic inspiration, and profound love, which significantly influenced both their creative outputs.

Beyond painting, Imroz was also a writer and poet himself, though his literary work is less widely known. He is remembered as an artist who lived a life dedicated to creativity and devotion, leaving behind a legacy of artistic expression and a testament to the enduring power of love and companionship.
