Historiographer Royal (Denmark)

The Historiographer Royal (Danish: Kongelig historiograf) of Denmark is an honorary title bestowed by the Danish monarch upon a historian of distinction. The position does not typically involve specific duties or mandates, and the holder is not necessarily employed by the state. It is largely a mark of recognition for significant contributions to Danish historical scholarship. Historically, the role may have involved some expectation of chronicling royal events or providing historical advice, but in modern times, it is primarily an honorific title. The appointment is made at the discretion of the reigning monarch and is not a lifetime appointment, although the period between appointments has varied significantly throughout its history. The Historiographer Royal is not the same as the National Archivist (Danish: Rigsarkivar), who heads the National Archives of Denmark.
