Gene Murphy (American football, born 1939)
Gene Murphy (born June 14, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, died October 29, 2019) was an American football coach. He is primarily known for his tenure as the head football coach at California State University, Fullerton (Cal State Fullerton).
Murphy attended Occidental College, where he played football. His coaching career began at the high school level in California. He then moved on to college coaching positions, including stints as an assistant coach at various institutions.
He became the head coach at Cal State Fullerton in 1980, leading the Titans to their most successful period in program history. Under Murphy, the Titans achieved a Division I-AA playoff appearance in 1983. His coaching emphasized a passing-oriented offense.
Cal State Fullerton discontinued its football program after the 1992 season. Murphy's overall record at Cal State Fullerton was 84-64-1.
After the program's termination, Murphy continued to be involved in football in various capacities, including coaching at the high school and community college levels. He was inducted into the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Hall of Fame.
